Orange County Clerk

County Clerk Rabbitt's Bio

Ann G. Rabbitt was born in Brooklyn and was raised in Greenwood Lake, New York in Orange County. She married her childhood friend, Robert Rabbitt, in 1983, and they made their home in Greenwood Lake. A friend to all who know her, she is simply known as Annie.

Long before Annie was elected to her new role as Orange County Clerk, she had blazed a long career of public service. Annie has made her mark in the community by holding many leadership roles.

Annie, a long-time local business owner, began her public service as President of the Greenwood Lake Chamber of Commerce from 1997-1999. Always interested in her community, Annie ran for and won her first public office as a Trustee for the Village of Greenwood Lake for which she served 1999-2002. Annie again expanded her public service by running and winning a seat on the Warwick Town Board from 2002-2005. Realizing she had a desire for broader public service, from 2004-2014, Annie went on to become a member of the New York State Legislature as an Assemblywoman. She was known as a tireless advocate for her district and the interests of New York State. She presently serves as Orange County Clerk.

Annie has worked hard to improve the relationship between government and the people it serves. Annie has always wanted government to run more like a business with the understanding people come first. She has often stated, “Government should partner with the people or get out of the way!”

Routinely recognized by her peers for her valuable service, Annie was a 1998 recipient of the Outstanding Citizens Achievement Award as well as a 2001 winner of the New York State Woman of Distinction Award. In May of 2008, she won the Woman of Achievement of Orange County Public Service Award for making a difference in the community. In 2010, she was selected as Grand Marshall of the Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Above all else, Annie Rabbitt is committed to her family. Her husband, Robert, is a retired Chief of Police for the Greenwood Lake Police Department. Their son, Robert III, is a Deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. Daughter Erin is a Police Officer with the NYPD. Annie is a very proud grandmother of two, and spends her free time enjoying her family.

Annie remains excited as ever in her new role as Orange County Clerk and the prospects for the County of Orange’s future.

“OUR GOAL IS TO CONTINUE TO STRIVE FOR EXCELLENT SERVICE TO THE RESIDENTS OF ORANGE COUNTY”

The Orange County Clerk’s Office is a window to local government, coming into contact with more people on a daily basis than perhaps any other branch of county government. Did you know that the clerk’s office is one of the oldest known official positions within local government? Its beginnings date back to Ancient Greece; the clerks would read aloud documents to the crowd at the opening of public meetings. When the colonists came to the United States, one of the first positions they established was a clerk. The colonists appointed a member of the colony in Plymouth to act as a “recorder” for the people.

Annie Rabbitt is currently the County Clerk for Orange County, being the 37th person elected to this position. The first person to hold this office was Derick Strom in 1702. The Office of County Clerk is an elected position that is voted on every four years. Annie is honored to be given the privilege to serve all of the residents of Orange County, whose population has grown to over 372,000 since it was established in 1683.

Annie is seeking to transition from a traditional office setting, to a more modernized advanced setting by having documents uploaded online, so that they are accessible to the public, from their home or office. So whether your reason to visit the clerk’s office is to get a copy of your deed, a passport, open a new business, or a DMV service: you can be sure that Annie Rabbitt and her helpful staff will be able to assist and answer any questions that you may have. We invite you to visit our current location.
